Antique Sterling Silver Thimble Case
American * Circa 1890s
This ornate sterling silver case was made to hold a thimble and has a silver post inside for the thimble to rest on. The pierced sides are embossed with lush scrolls. The bottom is stamped "Sterling" and has the maker's mark for the Webster Co. of North Attleboro, Mass. The top is in their "Orchid" pattern.
The condition is excellent and it measures 7/8" in diameter and 1" high. It has the original, strong hinge and clicks closed securely. Some initials are lightly scratched on the bottom. A very similar case is illustrated on p. 100 (plate 72) of Gay Ann Rogers' book An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools.
