Antique Stoneware: Early Southern Ovoid Jar W/ Cobalt, Marked "| B |", Ca.1840 For Sale
An early 19thC. Salt Glazed Ovoid Jar, most likely Southern (Virginia or the Carolinas), ca.1840. This piece has tremendous character, starting with the grey-green/olive clay color (similar to an alkaline glaze). The form is typical of the early Southern stoneware; with an interesting hand-formed rim, somewhat wavy, with stack marks on the upper surface. There are a pair of applied handles accented with cobalt. These are unusually flat and straight, versus the more common rounded lug-type. There are also two parallel incised lines at mid-shoulder. This Ovoid is faintly signed near the base: "| B |", and most likely slave-made (see last photo). There are several inclusions and imperfections in the clay. The rim, handles and base each have a chip. Also, a stack mark above a 1-3/4" x 2-1/2" surface flake on the backside. Please see photos for details and further description. Overall, a fine addition to any Antique Stoneware collection. Measures 9-1/2"W x 11-1/2"H overall. The base and outer rim diameters are 6-1/4" and 5-1/2", respectively. Weighs 7.6 lbs. with a capacity of approximately 1-1/2 gallons. This item will be professionally packed and ship promptly with full insurance to the winning buyer. . Good Luck, and be sure to browse my other sales ending ending daily. Thanks.
