Antique Stoneware: *nr* Important 6gal. Crock W/ Primitive Cobalt, Ca.1870, Ex For Sale
A HTF Cobalt-Decorated 6Gal. Crock from Connecticut, ca.1870. This is an impressive piece, weighing in at over 20 lbs! The impressed stamp is cobalt-washed and reads: S. L. PEWTRESS, NEW HAVEN, CT. This is the mark of Samuel Pewtress, who operated a pottery there from 1868-1887. Features a fairly scarce Stylized Floral Cornucopia, sometimes referred to as a "Tornado Bouquet". The design is fairly Primitive, but well-executed in bold Slip-Trailed Cobalt. There is a small ding on the rim in back; otherwise in excellent overall condition! I rarely see blue-decorated Connecticut pieces of this size without significant damage and/or repairs. This one is a Keeper and will display prominently in any Antique Stoneware collection.
