The Thimble Holder: Hinged egg shaped thimble holder which dates to the late Victorian or Edwardian era. Made of a brass or golden metal alloy with an embossed floral and foliage pattern decoration on both the lid and base and complete with brass carrying chain. The base is lined with red "plush" and a quilted red fabric cutaway thimble nest; the lid is lined with a quilted blue fabric and fine ric-rac braid. The holder is in very good condition for its age. Approx. 4.5 cm from end to end. Weighs 13 grams (without thimble).

The Thimble: Victorian sterling silver thimble with plain pattern top, over an engraved wriggle work border, vacant cartouche and faceted turn over rim. The thimble has no assay marks per se but is stamped E.W (for Edward Webb formerly of 63 Branston Street and 81 Brearley Street, Birmingham) in the knurling and tests as sterling silver. In excellent condition - in round and free of holes, dents, damage and repairs. Height approx. 2.5 cm; internal base diameter approx. 1.5 cm; weight 4.1 grams.

In A History of Thimbles (p 212) Edwin F. Holmes describes this type of thimble case as: "Typical of the late Victorian period is a range of small thimble cases made of metal sheeting in the shape of an egg or a rectangular box fitted with a small metal chain. The sheeting which was impressed with a light design, was moulded to shape and held within a brass framework. The inside fittings designed to hold the thimble were made of cardboard and other similar materials in bright colours. These cases, which were available as cheap souvenirs were made to hold a brass thimble and were sold, it is believed, from 1890 to 1910."

Because these thimble cases were so attractive it is, of course, not uncommon or unusual to find that people subsequently used them to preserve their more treasured silver thimbles.
