An extremely ironical sculpture, well know for the original, theVenus de Milo(Greek:Αφροδίτη της Μήλου,Aphroditi tis Milou) is anancient Greekstatue and one of the most famous works ofancient Greek sculpture. Initially it was attributed to the sculptorPraxiteles, but from an inscription that was on itsplinth, the statue is thought to be the work ofAlexandros of Antioch. Created sometime between 130 and 100 BC, the statue is believed to depictAphrodite, theGreek goddessof love and beauty; however, some scholars claim it is the sea-goddessAmphitrite, venerated onMilos.
The original is amarblesculpture, slightly larger than life size at 203cm (6ft 8in) high. Part of an arm and the original plinth were lost following its discovery. It is currently on permanent display at theLouvre MuseuminParis. The statue is named after the Greek island of Milos, where it was discovered.
