Antique U.s. Military Large Packers Saddle Full Rigged High Back W/ Pocket Vgc:
This is a full rigged large US Military Packers saddle that is in very nice condition for it's age. Just how old it is I don't know, but I would certainly say that it has been around for quite a few decades. It is stamped US on the bottom of the left fender as shown in the ninth picture. It is a very heavy saddle, weighing 37 lbs. It's total length is long at 28". The seat area measures 17" and this measurement was taken from the base of the horn to the top edge of the cantle and I have shown how I measured it in picture #10.
This saddle came fromthe estate sale of a fellow here in New England who had over the years collected numerous Military & Cavalry items. For many, many yearshe had kept this saddlein a room of his farm house where it had been displayed as a show-piece. I believe that is why this saddle is in such nice condition, as it does not appear to have been used much at all. The leather is very smooth and has a nice russet color, although there are some areas of slight discoloration (mottling of the color)as seen in the pictures. I have not seen any crazing or cracking of the leather on this saddle, probably due to the fact that in all ofit's years it hasnotbeen exposed to the elements, outside temperatures or much use.
The saddle has the outward appearance of being just like it was when it was first made. But there are a few things that do age it-- the underside fleece is real sheepskin and rather thick. It's color is an assortment of different shades of yellowish/brown as seen in the last picture. The fleece is thicker than what you normally see on an old saddle and there are a few spots where it is missing and there are someother areaswherethe fleeceis starting to fall off. There are some small scratches and little ding marks on the seat. A few slight scuff marks on the top of the horn and one small scuff mark on the edge of the cantle. But all in all there is not much to really fault this old saddle on except for the color variations on some parts of the saddle. It even still hasit's original latigo tie strings, which are quite long on the front & back of the saddle.
This fenders and the stirrup leathers are a little stiff.I believe that this is dueto the fact that this saddle stood on a stand in a house for perhaps decades andadded to thatit's leather does not appear to have been actually "broken in". Alsoit does not seem to have beenused to the point where the owner felt he had to oil or condition it. This saddle has been on a stand in a house for many, many years and I believe that the only care that ithas receivedhas beenthe regular house hold dusting.
Structure wise the saddle is good. The tree is sound and the leather and structure of the horn is nice and tight, no movement. The rigging issolid (picture #7) and the stirrups leathers are in nice condition and adjust with the old fashioned leather latigo tie strings, no buckles. I have conditioned the saddle a little, but it could probably use a little more as the saddle is quite usable.
This nice old saddle is being sold "no returns" and I'll gladly send anyone any additional pictures that they might like, as well as answer any questions.
