Antique Univ. Of Michigan Bookends, Bronze Clad By Pompeian Bronze, 1920's For Sale
Wonderful antique bookends presenting the name and seal of University of Michigan in a decorative setting. The seal itself includes (though difficult to make out) the Lamp of Knowledge at the very center, with heraldic banner below. Also the date of 1837 (the year Michigan became a State). And at the top, a frieze of 2 classical figures engaged in study, a large Lamp of Knowledge between them. These are electro-formed (more commonly known as bronze-clad), a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze was made to adhere to a plaster figure through the chemical process of electro-plating. The indentations in the bottoms are where metal loops extruded, those loops used to suspend the pieces in a vat of some electro-plating solution. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900's to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces yet still were affordable by the middle class. One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze of NYC, operating in the early '20s. On the backs, bottom left, very faint from wear, are the remnants of maker marks and possibly the artist's name. But I know for certain these are Pompeian as the aforementioned frieze of classical figures appears on many sets of bookends that still clearly are marked Pompeian. Condition is very good. No breaks in the cladding, only minor dings and dents, shown by pencil points. Finish - and paint - all original and in great shape, except notice that the white paint on the seal of one piece has worn away. That one piece also sits a bit unevenly on its "bare" bottom, but I have glued back on the felts that had been affixed by a previous owner (I had removed those felts to take the picture of the bottoms) and, with those felts in place, both pieces sit flat and stable. 5 3/4 inches tall; 3 3/4 inches wide; 2 1/4 inches deep. And fairly heavy at 2 pounds EACH PIECE. Perfect gift for the Wolverine student or alum. US shipping only. USPS priority mail with insurance. I SPECIALIZE IN ANTIQUE BOOKENDS AND DECORATIVE OBJECTS.
