Vanderman Antique Strongbox

This beautiful strong box was made by the VandermanManufacturing Company of Willimantic, Connecticut, patent date of July 13,1897. This particular strong box was a tool box as noted on the brass labelatop, which reads: Tools for Water Tube Boilers - Built By The Babcock &Wilcox Co. - New York & London. The Vanderman brass label is on the front.

Its construction is 1/16” steel which is formed into arectangular shape. The steel overlaps on the sides and the sides of the bottom.It has 1/8”cast iron corners; four onthe lid and two on the upper box front; the four moldings comprising the frontcorners have an opening coming down through for additional securing. The lockshank differs from all others that I have seen as it comes up through the top frontof the box.

The box is riveted throughout starting with the steel,then the oak rails surrounding the lid and top and bottom of the box. The iron castedcorners and remaining corners with 1/8” steel bands are riveted into thoserails. Two riveted hinges are attachedto the back lid and tuck under the backside rail of the box. Three oak bumpers angled on ends are rivetedto both top and bottom. Lastly there are side mounted heavy duty handles withriveted hardware.
