Antique Vegetable Ivory Acorn Thimble Case
English * 1895 Sterling Silver ThimbleThis antique vegetable ivory thimble case is nicely carved in the form of an acorn. Inside is a sterling silver thimble with a hand engraved ivy pattern on the wide band. It has the English silver hallmarks for Chester 1895 and the maker's mark for Henry Griffith & Sons. It's about an American size 9 (16 mm diameter opening) though it's marked an English size 16. There are two needle holes in the top but the overall condition is good with no other damage.
The acorn has a small chip in the top finial but no other damage. The patina is lovely and it screws together well. It measures almost 1 3/4" long. Some like this are shown on p. 211 of Edwin Holmes' book A History of Thimbles.
Vegetable Ivory comes from the corozo (tagua) nut of a South American palm tree. It has the hardness and texture of ivory and a warm honey color. The little spots and ivory like grain are also natural features of this material.
