Antique Vegetable Ivory Acorn Thimble Case W/ Sterling Silver Thimble * C1870:
Antique Vegetable Ivory Acorn Thimble Case
English * Sterling Silver Thimble * Circa 1870This antique vegetable ivory thimble case is nicely carved in the form of an acorn. Inside is a sterling silver thimble with a faceted rim and an engraved band. The thimble tests sterling silver but is not marked. English silversmiths didn't mark small items (and have to pay duty on them) until required to by law in the early 1880s. It's about an American size 8 (15.25 mm diameter opening). The condition is mint, crisp and in round with no holes or even needle marks.
The acorn is also in great condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. The patina is lovely and it screws together tightly. It measures 2" long. Some like this are shown on p. 211 of Edwin Holmes' book A History of Thimbles.
Vegetable Ivory comes from the corozo (tagua) nut of a South American palm tree. It has the hardness and texture of ivory and a warm honey color. The little spots and ivory like grain are also natural features of this material.
