This antiqueVictorian bodkin case is carvedof vegetable ivory with all over pierced designs and little finials ateach end. It\'s not really suitable for small needles because of theholes, but it came with 2 bodkins. One is flat steel and the other is agadget bodkin that clamps onto the ribbon or cord when asliding button pushes the clamp end together. It\'s marked \"The Tyton,Regd\".

The conditionof the case isexcellent with no chips, cracks or loss and ithas a lovely patina. Itmeasures 3 3/4\" long. Thebodkins are also in nice condition. Somevegetable ivory needlecases are shown on p.163 of Nerylla Taunton\'sbook AntiqueNeedlework Tools &Embroideries.

VegetableIvory comes from the corozo(tagua) nut of a South Americanpalm tree. It has the hardness and texture of ivory and a warm honeycolor. The little spots and ivory like grain are also natural featuresof this material.
