Antique Ventriloquist Doll Dummy C1900-1915 Titanic Rare Puppet Sailor Mannequin For Sale
An absolutely stunning ventriloquist doll hand made at the turn of the century.
I got him from an American guy who has had it in his family for over 70 years, before that he is unsure of it's origin.
It says H.M.S Titanic on the sailors cap which could well mean that he was built in the Titanic era sometime between 1909 and 1912 though this could have been added after it was built.
I've shown it to an expert who dated it a bit earlier between 1890 and 1900 which leads me to believe that the H.M.S Titanic on the cap was added after it had been built.
I've had a couple of early ventriloquist dolls over the years but this one is by far the best, the head and the paint work are absolutely stunning and he's wearing the original clothes. As far as I can tell he hasn't been restored or re-touched in over 100 years!
He's mostly made of papier mache but his hands are carved wood and I think his hair is horse hair.
He has two functions, one is for his mouth which opens and closes and the other is for his hair which springs up and lifts his cap when you pull the rope. Unfortunately the second function (the springing hair) needs some attention as the chord to pull it seems to have gone back up into his head. I'm sure though that this can be easily found and repaired.
His shoes are also hand carved from wood.
He measures approximately 83cm tall and 25cm wide
His head on it's own measures approximately 22cm tall by 13cm wide
I really hope that he goes to a good home because I'm extremely fond of him.
I can insure the package if the buyer wishes, it will be an extra £15 on the cost of postage
