A Diamond Eyed 15ct Skull Gold Memento Mori Mourning Ring. MOURNING RINGS Mourning jewellery mirrored the lives and times of the people who wore it. Itwas a souvenir to remember a loved one, a reminder to the living of theinevitability of death and a status symbol, especially during the Victorianera.Mourning rings were presented by the bereaved family to friends and familymembers as a memorial to the deceased. The Death's Head motif (skull) was the most popular symbol used upon these rings. Many wealthy people included in their wills instructions on howthe rings would be designed and how many should be made. For sale we have a diamond set mourning ring adorned with a skull with diamond set eyes. The skull is set with two small (approx.) 0.02 ct rose cut diamonds. Rose cut diamonds areprimitivelycut as technology of the era did not allow for todays perfection in the cutting of small diamonds. The reverse of the skulls head is stamped '15ct'. This carat of gold was used between 1854 and 1931. Tests conclusively as 15 ct yellow gold. Finger size N 1/2 (UK). 7 1/4 (USA). 54 1/4 (Europe). All approximate. The skull measures approximately 8 mm x 7 mm. The skull is solid gold. The band measures approximately 3 mm width and bares a worn and slightly faded inner engraving that reads: 'Mary Horne 1859Æ 68 Non Omnis Moriar' This would mean that Mary Horne was born in 1791 and died in 1859 at the age of 68 years old.The latin translates roughly as 'I shall not wholly die'. The ring weighs 3.7 grams approx. The gold has wear with a few scratches and knocks but overall this is in excellent condition. This is all consummate with the age of the ring as a pre-worn item but it is still a very wearable solid little ring. Similar rings can be seen displayed in the V&A museum in London and a few examples on their is a macabre yet feminine ring in historical 15ct yellow gold.
