Antique Victorian - c.1890 - White & Amber Flowers - 6x6 - Majolica Tile:
$15.00

A splay of white flowers and buds, with amber/brown stamens, surrounded by brown and green leaves, molded and indented, upon a dark green background, fills this antique tile\'s surface.

This well made, relief molded, embossed and indented, white dust-pressed, antique, majolica, floral, tile, is obviously made by a talented maker, but we have not been able to specifically identify one. This tile is English, and a pattern number is stamped in ink on the verso, and the grip pattern is fairly distinctive, and we have found this tile offered by English companies for fireplace surround tiles, but the maker identification is always absent. We have a few of these tiles and it would be nice to know who made them. This tile should be common enough to be identified by several collectors. We hope to hear from one.

Condition: This tile is in very good condition, save for the typical crazing(*) of a hundred year old, glazed, majolica tile. One lower corner appears to have been clipped for its original installation into an English wash stand, to allow it to be fixed in place by a small brass screw and washer. No chips, breaks, repairs, or dings. The provided scans of this tile are unforgiving in their ability to reveal flaws of any kind. So, you can clearly see, this tile is in a very nice state.

This tile measures: H 6\" x W 6\" x D 1/2\" Weight: 16 oz. Material: White Dust-Pressed Clay Style: Art Nouveau Majolica

(* \"Crazing is a near inherent feature of high gloss tiles, only a few percent of one hundred year old tiles do not exhibit crazing, even today manufacturers of high gloss tiles offer no guarantee that glaze will not craze. Crazing is caused by expansion of the tile body when it absorbs moisture. glaze is in effect a thin layer of glass on the surface of the tile which is impervious to moisture, the clay is porous can absorb moisture and when it does it expands a little. As the glaze can not stretch it cracks finely, this is crazing.\" --Tile Heaven)
