A Victorian Scottish Mauchline Ware foldingneedle case with the very scarce transfer of a highland warrior to the front, made from the wood of the Big Tree of Kippenross, and dated for 1865.
The case is finished in the transfer ware finish & isof 'book' or folding form, with wooden boards & a leather spine.
The front carries the scarce transfer of a highland warrior standing on the shore of a loch with mountains in the background. He is dressed in a kilt, a plaid, and a feather mounted bonnet & is holding sword aloft in one handand a shield in the other.
The rear of the case states : 'Part of the Large Tree of Kippenross termed the Big Tree Of Kippenross (near Bridge of Allan) during the Reign of Charles II, Age 440 Years, 1865' with a table below giving the various dimensions of the tree.
The red silk lined interior hasa wooden serpentine needleholder to each side, both with gilt & black transfer needle sizes 6 to 9, and a central felt leaf.
Condition is fine, with only light wear to the silk & leather spine commensurate with age - please see all photos.
The case measures approx 3 1/2" x 2" (8.8cm x 5.2cm).
