Victorian Scottish Agate Brooch……
I absolutely adore this brooch - it is huge, fat and rounded and is superbly tactile.
I have read about Scottish Agate brooches featuring fossils but have never actually held one before.
This isa marvelous Victorian example C.1860 - 70with eight lobes alternating bright green Malachite withDinosaure Egg. For a little bit of Agate Jewellery history - see under the photo\'s below.
It is set in a thick silver frameand is backed with black granite. This is a well made brooch, the front and even the granite rear are curved and the metal work, hinge and catch are of good quality.
Condition: There are three cracks in the granite in the rear and although there looks to be a crack in the fossil on the front it is actuallywithin the stone.
There are no marks but it acid tests as sterling silver.
There is a good strong pin that extends beyond the brooch itself* and fastens with a simple C catch.
Size is: 2” (5cm) in diameter
