Antique Victorian Silver Plated Teapot 1874 John Round & Son Ltd
For Sale: stunning antique Victorian silver plated Teapot beautifully presented with a stylized bamboo design decorated with an Oriental pattern and ornate shaped handle and spout ~ it hasa cow bone finial handle to the hinged lid ~ this stunning quality teapot is made in or around 1874 by the Victorian SilversmithsJohn Round & Son Ltd as evidenced by the maker's marks to the base with a four trident trade mark and the letters JR&S ~ this teapot measures approx 5" inches high upto the top of the finial ~ the handle and spout are approx. 10" inches apart, the base is 5.9"x5.1" inches ~ the condition is very good for its age with some minorloss of plate associated with use and age and will require a good polish to remove the tarnish ~the bone finial is a little warn ~ I did not find any dings ~ it has a nice old patina and will make a wonderful addition to any collection and a fabulous teapot to use or display within a vintage or Period inspired interior.
Some history about the Maker:
The firm was established by John Round in Sheffield in 1847 as a small familiar workshop attached to his house in Tudor Street. The business proved successful and the firm in partnership with his son Edwin went under the title of John Round & Son. In 1874 the firm became John Round & Son Ltd. At the time the Round family ceased to have an active role in the business and the firm was managed by Henry Pawson, Joseph Gamble and J.B. Barber as directors (in 1875 Edwin Round & Son Ltd, Holly Street, entered its mark in Sheffield Assay Office). The trade mark of the firm was a globe surrounded by the inscription ALL THE ROUND. In 1886 the business of Ridge, Allcard & Co (Lions Works, Eyre Lane) was amalgamated and John Ridge became the manager maintaining this role for about 25 years. Supposedly, in this period the JR & S mark was sometimes accompanied by the "four tridents" trade mark, previously used by Joseph Ridge.
