The lock is marked Yale & Towne, Hartford, Connecticut (no key for the lock)
Pine construction with Oak slats,ornate Metal reinforements, metal banding and hardware,Leather straps, leather handle on one end (missing on the other end), and fabric lining.
31\" wide x 20\" deep x 21-3/4\" high overall, a nice medium size.
This trunk is slightly hump backed, but it is so shallow, that it would make a fine coffee table. The size is also well suited for this purpose.
The previous owner took some time to fix this trunk up. I can see that he or she removed a canvas covering to expose the pine underneath. The leather and metal parts were not removed, so some signs of the canvas can be made out around the edges here and there. The wood and metal parts were laquered I think and they have a very rich patina and finish now. The leather is very worn and occasionally fragmented. It is tacked in place to preserve it when needed. The leather was not treated as far as I can tell. The overall effect of the trunk\'s exterioris very nice and charming in my opinion. I love the oak and metal and leather on pine look very much. It retain\'s its antique look and shows its age while being quite functional. The only actual flaws I see on this trunk is a small ding to the metal bottom (shown)that lifted a pine board a little inside, and the missing leather handle as noted above.
Inside, a new fabric covering was added. It was just stapled in place, so it is fairly loose. It can be used the way it is, you can replace the fabric, or you can more securely attach the fabric with glue and perhaps tacks. I like the color and pattern though: sage colored clovers over blue stripes alternating with a light colored stripes with a dot type design. No till with this trunk. This interior is very superior to most musty old paper lined ones I see.
