This superb silver filigree card case has a British Hallmark with a stamp that was used for a long period of time instead of the lion passante which was called the "Lion's Head Erased". (See photo). The hallmark was used from approximately 1702-the 19th Century. This particular mark for silver was developed by the British at that time, to identify the new Sterling Standard of 92.5% for Fine Silver, and the Britannia Standard of 95.84%. Check out my references "Discovering Hallmarks on English Silver" by John Bly and "A Dictionary of Marks" by Margaret Macdonald-Taylor.
The intricate filigree lace design on this card case appears to date it to the late 1880's and is in absolutely excellent condition for 100+ years old. The craftsmanship is masterful. There is no unraveling of silver, dents, scrapes, rust or any other flaws that I can find. It closes perfectly, tight and snug. The hinge movement is smooth. It measures 2 1/4" x 3 9/16" and weighs a little over 1 oz.
This fabulously detailed 19th C. sterling silver lace case was once-upon-a-time used to carry beautifully illustrated calling cards in true Victorian tradition. Calling card cases are highly collectible today for display or to carry 21st Century business cards. Often they were monogrammed with the initials of the owner. This magnificent case still has an empty unmarked polished silver plaque waiting for some lucky person to engrave and make it their own.
Please check out our other sterling collectibles, some silver, some plate, some just plain fabulous, but always a special piece of history dating from the Turn of the 19th Century: Victorian, Art Nouveau, Edwardian and Art Deco.
