Antique Vienna Bronze Cold Painted Bird Sculpture Signed Geschutzt Vase Holder For Sale
Presented here for your offerding review is this antique cold painted Vienna bronze sculpture of a bird as part of a vase holder assembly! The lively little birdie resembles a common sparrow, but quite uncommonly, he carries an envelope sealed with red sealing wax in his beak. A love letter, perhaps? These detailed bronzes are found quite readily as miniatures, but in this case we find a larger scaled bird at roughly 3" long perched on the rim ofwhat was originallya metal vase holder.I was told there was an etched glass vase that was fitted into the protrusionon the top. The previous owner said thevase had broken,so the glass was ground down into the opening. You can see the remaining glass inside when lookingat the picture from the top view.As found, the piece measures 4" tall by 6" long, the bowl of the holder having a diameter of about 4 1/2". The whole assembly looks like a birdjust lighting upon the rim of a water fountain found out in the garden. Maybe the crystal vase that once was at the centergave the illusion ofspouting water. How lovely!
Like all Vienna bronzes, thislittle bird is very realistic in his appearance, with detailed modeling showing every feather, and everywrinkle in his feet. The cold painted colorshave chipped off in several places, as is often the case with this type of applied paint. He is attached to the holder by way of screws in the bottoms of his feet. A viewof the underside will reveal that the bird issigned under the tail with the word GESCHUTZT, and something else incised above it that I can't make out.A look at the bottomwill show that the holder is made from a white colored metal that is plated with a copper colored finish. The finishnow shows agediscolorations, mottling of the surfaces, and a green patina in some places. To the best of mylimited knowledge, I believe this to be a piece of Vienna bronze datingfrom the last part of the 19th century to the early part of the 20th century. Please understand that this is not my area of expertise!
