The History
This beautiful statue comes from the early 1900\'s! Antiques from this Era are beyond hard to find.
Chinese Export jewelry became popular during the late Victorian Period and lasted until the 1960\'s. In a lot of ways Chinese Export jewelry fashioned what we know of jewelry today. During these period\'s Chinese Craftsmen including Jewelers, Stone cutters were considered by far the best in the world.
The rich and wealthy would have a piece custom ordered through their local jeweler whom was usually gifted at drawing a design to send off to contacts in China to craft and send back. As you can imagine, this was not cheap, that being said, these pieces are very rare and few have survived until today.
ChineseStone cutters were considered some of the finest artisans in the world duringthe Vintage Era. They would carve western themes as well as the more raretraditional Eastern themes into their many pieces.
Precious coral isharvested almost exclusively in the Mediterranean off the coasts of Italy,France, Spain, Algeria, and Tunisia. Throughout history coral is a materialthat has been used in making jewelry and sculptures. Many antique coralcarvings are incredibly detailed. Lately it has become very difficult toacquire antique coral. Most of the coral used for antiques grows very deep inthe sea. Sometimes, as deep as 2000 meters below sea level. Another factor thatmakes coral so rare is the growth rate. The rarest of coral can grow slowerthan a millimeter per year. That means that a 3 inch coral figure could havetaken 75 years to grow.
This gorgeous statue weighs in at a total of 69.1 Grams. This is by far the one of the most vibrant pieces of coral I\'veever seen. These statues can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the size and ornateness.
The statue does not have a stand, but one could be made for it. It does stand as is.
The Piece
The figure is carved out of untreated Ox blood/Salmon Coral. The color hue is more of the Mediterranean Ox blood Red Coral hue with a solid and vibrant deep red with hints of white striations in areas. This hue is beyond rare and hard to find in antique Chinese statues. It was reserved for only the richest of the rich, in this case most likely a person of the Chinese Court.
The statue is carved into the shape an ornate Turtle figure. The Turtle has a intricate shell theme on the top as well as feet and a hand carved head looking out depending on where you stand him. He can sit as is without a stand, the figure was made like this. In all my years of buying carved antique coral, i have never seen a turtle figure.
The rarity of this amazing piece is beyond words, as stated above, this type of coral grew around a mm a year. The color as well is beyond rare and includes that highly desired vibrant Salmon to Ox blood hue.
These carving would have taken months, if not years, to completely craft and carve by hand. This is a museum quality piece that is truly a once in a lifetime find.

The statue measures 2.5\" long by 3/4\" tall. It weighs a total of 69.1 Grams. The base of the statue is flat to allow for standing on its own, but a stand could be made for the piece to allow for a more secure placement.
