Antique Chinese Canton Embroidered Silk Manton De Manila Piano Shawl 87”x 87”
A stunning silk, authentic, late1800- early1900s hand embroidered Chinese Canton Manton De Manila antique piano shawl – exceptional condition. There are a few small water spots (see pictures) - I have not cleaned it, but I did steam it with a jiffy steamer to help the wrinkles fall out (after taking the second photo shown to right).
There are fabulous, exotic embroidered birds of different varieties and sizes, Temples, Pagodas, Asian garden bridges, lotus blossoms and full-bloom lotus, with a scalloped pattern of vines and flowers. The pattern is repeated at the corners. The embroidery is rich and expertly done with fully saturated colors on a candlelight colored silk. It is as perfect on the back as it is on the front and nearly impossible to tell the difference.
This is not a reproduction. It is a rare, exquisite piece of art that was entirely hand made in the Art Deco period or earlier – it is an authentic, antique Manton Piano Shawl.
Slightly larger than 87 inches square (220.98 cm), including 13.5 inches of fringe on all four sides, and 3.75 inches of silk woven macramé. The silk center is 53 inches by 53 inches. It weighs about 2.5 pounds.
Free of holes, repairs, colors bleeds, with several, less than ½” diameter, water spots.
Trading of these silk shawls started in the 17th century, reaching its peak in the late 19th century. These old piano shawls reminiscent of the galleon trade are treasured in fine homes around the world and passed on to the next generation as family heirlooms.
