I recently returned from playing in a hickory shaft gutty ball event at Foxburg Golf Club that is located in Foxburg, PA near Pittsburgh. Many thanks to Karen and Tom Johnson for running an excellent event. Foxburg GC is the oldest continuously used golf course in the US. While the agronomy has changed over the years the course is much the same as it was in 1887. Great course for hickory play so if you are in the area give it a go with your hickories. Very reasonably priced and plenty challenging.

The Foxburg GC club house has a museum on the second floor that is open to the public at no charge and is certainly worth a visit. It has many old long nose woods (Philps, McEwans and others) feather, gutty and other old and unusual balls, water irons, rake irons, one very old smooth face iron and other interesting golf related items. This museum was established in 1964 (well before the Golf Collectors Society was formed). Laurie Auchterlonie (1904-88) was asked to seed the museum with many old golf items from his shop in St Andrews, Scotland and from other sources. Laurie was one of the famous golfing Auchterlonies from St Andrews. His father was Willie and his uncles were David (1893 Open Champion), Tom and Laurie (1902 U S Open Champion). Laurie had substantial expertise in identifying old clubs and their restoration. He was also curator of the R&A museum in St Andrews and the World Golf Hall of Fame when it was in Pinehurst.

While at Foxburg I visited the home of an 80 year old gentleman who lived near the clubhouse in one of the several log houses built by Joseph Fox as a retreat for his wealthy golfing and other friends. Both this gentleman and his father were long time residents of Foxburg and club members. He decided that it was time for him to dispose of all the golf clubs his father acquired from Laurie Auchterlonie while Laurie was seeding the museum and I purchased them. Since these were acquired over 50 years ago, they are new to the market with excellent provenance. Some were restored by Laurie and others weren\'t. Some still have their original informational tags on them.

I have also shown all these clubs to one of the few remaining and acknowledgedexperts in the field of truly old clubs. We aren\'t talking about some old re-seller who sits around at home, buys clubs on , spruces them up a bit, makes up a nice story (often incomplete as he only provides available information that makes his clubs appear older and more valuable). Some of these sellers are not members of any collecting organization, have never attended any antique golf shows and have never had the opportunity to see and learn about the old golf clubs in person. Speaking of golf shows, The Golf Collectors Society is holding their annual meeting in the Chicago area this year at the Pheasant Run Resort in St Charles, IL. Lots of golf related items to view in rooms for several days prior to the actual show which will be held on Saturday, September 19. Public is welcome and there is no charge.

This particular club is a 35.5\"putter. The face is 1.1\" deep. 2\" wide across the top and 5\" long. My expert says you measure the length of the face of a long nose club by going to the point on the neck that is 1\" off the ground and then measuring from there to the point of the toe of the club.

The head ismarked Auchterlonie Hand Made. This club dates to the late 1890\'s, near the end of the long nose era (there is even an 1899 date on the tag on the club). I suspect Laurie Auchterlonie restored it and it is in good condition.Thefinish, horn and lead are all very good. 4 screws have been added to the sole to presumably hold the lead in place. The shaft is an old hickory that is straight, is without cracks and tight at the scare joinder. The shaft is marked Auchterlonie St Andrews. The grip is a newer Kinghorn leather wrap that is in good condition. This putter has good weight and you could play with it today.

Shipping in the US is calculated for this item and based on a3 pound box with full insurance and a signature required. The closer you are to me in NC (27712 zip) the less shipping will be. That is the way shipping works as it costs me more to ship a greater distance with all the carriers. While shipping might seem high insurance is not cheap so please keep that in mind.I do ship pretty much worldwide but shipping is a lot more to foreign locations and will require insurance and a signature. In accordance with the current policy I am only allowed to state that I accept payment via Paypal. NC residents must add 7.5% sales tax.
