Antique Vintage Maker Marked Isaac Cherry Durango Co Half Seat Saddle - Ca 1880 For Sale
Antique Vintage Maker Marked Isaac Cherry Durango CO Half Seat Saddle - ca 1880
Here is an Early Half Seat Saddle Circa 1880, that is marked Isaac Cherry CO. The saddle is marked 6 times, so he must have been very proud of it. The saddle has a solid double rigged seat, large square skirts and a 'Cheyenne Roll Cantle', with front, side and rear jockeys. This beautiful saddle has two very early 2 inch wide nickel silver star conchos and simple tooling throughout. The half double stirrup leathers are 3 inches wide. The seat measures 14 inches and the saddle is 30 inches long. The saddle is in very fine, but used condition, with only a few small marks. Some of the strings have been replaced, but overall a very collectible saddle.
Isaac Cherry was born in 1846 and died in 1926. He enlisted in the Civil War in 1862 in Flemington NJ. His unit guarded Washington DC and then the railroads in Virginia. The units disbanded in 1863 and Isaac went West, settling in Pueblo CO in the 1870s. Isaac did marry, but was quickly widowed. He was the first saddle maker in Durango CO. The saddle shop closed shortly after his death.
