Antique W. & L.e. Gurley Surveying Transit - Troy , Ny - Pat. 1916 Original Box:
This is an antique W. & L. E. GURLEY surveyor's transit with a patent date of JULY 25 . 1916 . It was found in the original box with Gurley Troy , N.Y. nameplate .Overall the transit appears to be in good condition with some restoration probably needed . The height of the level is 13" . The glass plate measures 4 1/2" in diameter ,. The scope is 10" long .The compass needle is 4 1/8" long .It appears to be made of mostly brass but the scope and the long level just beneath it appear to be another painted metal . All 3 levels appear to be intact and working . The brass too appears to have been painted . Whether this is original I don't know . The scope has paint wear . The paint on the brass is also worn though some brass appears to have never been painted . The lenses are intact . The transit swivels smoothly .The plate glass is unbroken but the inside of the glass needs cleaning . There are 2 horizontal windows to read measurements . One of these has a tiny crack about 1/2" long .There is tarnish and build-up on the 2smaller levels . They look like they maybe copper but I'm not sure .The original fitted box appears to be made of mahogany but the outside was painted brown . The leather strap on the box is broken . Because of my lack of technical knowledge on this piece , I am selling it AS IS for restoration . Interesting old piece . High offer pays postage .
