Antique War Of 1812 Flat Button British Officer Silver 44 Regiment For Sale
Recently found in a local estate is what we believe to be an authentic War of 1812 British officer's button. It is thin and flat and has a silver front. There is a crown and a 44 engraved on the front. There are no maker's marks observed. The construction is a layer of silver on the face surface of a copper button. There is no 'layer line' on the side edge. Under magnification the silver appears to have been smoothly spread onto the frontal surface diminishing along the surface edge. It measures 29/32" across and is 1/32" thick. With it's loop it is 5/16" high. There are no damages, repairs or excessive wear. We recently listed this as a Revolutionary War button but ended the sale when an member filled us in with the following information:
Very nice British officer button that is from the War of 1812. This unit saw action in . Bladensburg, Washington , Baltimore, New Orleans and Mobile. The REv War example has a raised 44 and crown with a leaf border. The post war example you have has an incised 44 and crown with an applied brass loop shank as is seen on many officer examples. Most enlisted are made of pewter. Really hard to tell the differeance without a reference book but that is what it is. I do collect mainly REv WAr but some times WAr of 1812 nice officer and enlisted example. If it were a REv WAr type value could be close to $1000 to the right person/ WAr of 1812 $85-$125 possibly more. I see your an sale house and probably rather see the sale go to close but if you have a Buy it Now please let me know. Feel free to use this information if you want to.
