Antique WEDGWOOD Historical Blue and White Plate BOSTON TEA PARTY Imported by Jones McDuffee & Stratton of Boston MA, dating to about 1899. In EXCELLENT Condition - no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. By Wedgwood, Etruria, England.Plate is 10 1/4\" in diameter.
Superb copperplate engraving transfer of the BOSTON TEA PARTY, which took place on December 16, 1773.You can see the \"indians\" and others unloading the tea and pitching it in the harbor in front of a crowd of enthusiastic colonial bystanders.
This version of the plate has the rose border ,with full blown roses and foliage.
The \"Tea Party\" occurred when the famous SONS OF LIBERTY, some disguised as Native Americans, boarded English ships in Boston harbor and threw the cargo of TEA overboard to protest the English TEA ACT, which placed prohibitive taxes on tea in the colonies. Their battle cry was \"NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!\"
One of the famous series of more than 1200 blue Wedgwood plates produced for Jones, McDuffee & Stratton beginning in 1881, depictingscenes, events, personalities, buildings, monuments, educational institutions, civic and national landmarks, and shipsall over the United States.
Beautiful Delft blue coloration. The back is marked \"The Boston Tea Party Dec 16th 1773\" withthe Jones McDuffee & Stratton \"Sole Importer\" mark with the lion holding the plate, and\"Wedgwood Etruria England\". Also has the unusual \"COPYRIGHT J, McD & S 1899\" mark with the final 9 obscured by the blind date stamp. and \"WEDGWOOD\" is also impressed blind (no color) in the blank.
Very good condition, no chips, cracks, or crazing. Some roughness around the edge and a little un-evenness of the border, but nothing drastic. Will look wonderful hanging on a wall or gracing a shelf. Was never used for dining or service - no utensil marks whatsoever.
Plate is 10 1/4\" in diameter.
Please note that there appear to be small red marks on this plate in several of the photos - these are only reflections. This plate is as true blue as the Sons of Liberty.
