PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONThis is a lovely antique hand carved shell cameo and 14K yellow gold brooch measuring 2 5/8 inches long by 2 1/8 inches wide with a hidden folding bail, enabling it to also be worn as a pendant. As early as 1805, craftsmen began using shell for cameos because it was easily carved due to its many layers, as compared to onyx or agate. Designs throughout history include many subjects. But, the most common of all is that of a noble Romanesque maiden with classic features, Roman dress, jewelry and intricately, often floral embellished hair. The oval cameo depicts a Victorian era woman with fancy hair and dress details and is set in a filigree decorated frame. It is marked, tested and guaranteed 14K and has been professionally cleaned and brightly polished.
