Georgian Verge Fusee pocket watch & fob chain
A very early, working verge fusee pocket watch with chain & signets
See the face set to the mechanics and the serpent to the side? This was made when watch making was an art form.
Above: Different angles shown of the mechanics
Note the original chain drive is present and a weld repair is present to both watch and pair case
Inside the pair case is found original papers of: H. TER HARMSEL horologemaker Gond en Zilber RIJSSEN Note the enameled face is made to the Dutch taste
Circa 1820's hallmarked six row chain with three signets(two vacant) and one serving as a key(this does not fit the watch) this is very rare!
Above: some of our other lovely items for sale on or already sold Please see above left for further images to be super sized for extra viewing Pocket watch era:
1730 - 1780
Chain era: early 1820's Dutch
I must admit this is a truly remarkable pair to behold, and I am humbled by not only their survival into the 21st Century, but the watch is still working!
With a fire gilt movement with makers mark: Tho Rey LONDON for Thomas Reynolds, a respected clock and watch maker in the 18th Century, the square baluster pillars and engraved decoration(including face and serpent) dates the watch between 1730 - 1780; inline with the time Reynolds was active.
The actual watch measures 4.2cms in diameter and holds a delicate enameled face with Dutch taste decoration(note the original bulls eye glass is retained) which brings me to its pair case.
This outer case holds the original Dutch paper label that reads:
H. TER HARMSEL horologemaker Gond en Zilber RIJSSEN
There has been an old solder repair to the case whilst originality of the case is retained. Ultimately this watch is a fine specimen for originality as is the accompanying chain.
The Dutch watch chain is circa 1820 and hallmarked to the reverse of the flower medallion with the sword mark which dates it after 1814. There is also the makers stamp to the top of signets(see images).
Each signet shows delicate filigree work with love heart cartouche(uninscribed) and is in the form of two seals and one pocket watch key; this key is too small for the watch.
Having come to me as a pair, I am offering them jointly as such. Their beauty is one of complete gratuity and as a keeper of time for some two hundred and fifty years theirs is a journey to remain together.
