Welcome to the Shoe & Boot department of Poppies Cottage!
This is a late Victorian or Edwardian pair of spats, which were probably made for horse riding.
I say this because there are traces of mud around the foot straps of leather! These fasten with a metal buckle.
The actual spats are made of felt, and there is an interesting red edge to the inner seam.
Clearly manufactured, they are stamped with possibly a size of 6 [faded].
The side fastening edges are bound with a plaited braid and the original buttons are all present.
When they came to me they were covered in 'fluff' but I have lint rollered them and they are without any damage at all, although the leather straps have been often fastened.
A nice example.
