This antique/vintage amber Acidophilus milk bottle was a great find for me as I never knew it existed...the milk or the bottle! I had no clue that Acidophilus milk came in a bottle or that it was in my possession. It could have belonged to my grandparents as my parents have no memory of it. The bottle has no cracks, however it has one small chip or imperfection at the mouth of the bottle and as clearly seen in my photos, the label is taped in many places. The bottle shows other signs of wear...again clearly seen in my photos. I thought about keeping and displaying the bottle, but then remembered how I found it...because we are down-sizing and purging stored/boxed items we didn\'t know existed. This item is more for a collector...someone who might treasure it for the historical value. I enjoyed researching this product/item and have learned a lot in the process, mostly about fermentation techniques. I have provided only a brief history of what I have learned, I have tried to place a date (circa) for this bottle, the best I can say is that it was made/manufactured before 1945...closer to pre-1943 when the company was bought up. It is possible this bottle dates anywhere from the 1920\'s through 1943. This bottle measures almost 8 1/2\" high. Here is some history: Harry A. Cheplin was a Yale University scientist (Ph.D.) who was written about in many publications including The New England Journal of Medicine regarding his studies on acidophilus milk and its therapeutic benefits. Acidophilus milk was touted/promoted primarily from the early 1920\'s through the early 1940\'s as a mental and physical tonic. It was believed to cure mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety and bring about vitality throughout the entire body. Acidophilus milk was covered by U.S. patent 1,506,501 on August 26, 1924 and issued to Rettger and Cheplin to prevent its \"unscrupulous exploitation.\" But by the mid 1930\'s even the dairy industry was distancing acidophilus milk from medicinal properties. In a 1938 article one dairy scientist suggested that the time had come to merchandise Acidophilus milk simply as a superior fermented milk beverage...not as a medicine. Cheplin\'s Biological Laboratories was located in Syracuse, New York...the exact date it opened I could not find research on, however they were acquired by Bristol Laboratories (Bristol-meyers) in 1943 and by 1945 they were finally renamed \"Bristol Laboratories.\" Cheplin manufactured Acidophilus milk and during WWII Cheplin became a key supplier of mass-produced penecillin for the armed forces as they were experts in fermentation techniques.
