Antique/vtg 1 Day Germany Musical Black Forest Haufbauhaus Animated Cuckoo Clock For Sale
Here is avery attractive older1 day wooden hanging wall clock which chimes on the hour and halfhour. It was one of Emil Schmeckenbecher's favorite designs and inspired by the famous Hofbrauhaus at the Marion Platz in Munich Germany. The Hofbrauhaus is the actual birthplace of the annual Oktoberfest in Germany and I believe it still hosts the event, at least in part. This is anuniquely-designed, full featuredcuckoo clock thatwas producedin the Black Forest about 40 years ago in what was then, "West Germany".It isa full featured clock, and one of the most unique ever produced. This clock is made from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of theBlack Forest. The case is made to look very much like the front of the old "Hofbrauhaus" in Munich Germany; it's still there though the beer drinking only goes on inside the establishment and only until 10:30 pm, a far cry from what it used to be!
It is lavished with colorful window trim and, flowers, and a heart shape near the very bottom. The left window is missing a sash and some trim. There is a carved wooden platform near the bottom complete with rail fences on each end, colorful flower sprays, and a colorful Bavarian man on either side of the dial sitting atop a beer keg...of course. It has a banner featuring the Hofbrauhaus name and a Lowenbrau logo at the very top. There is a colorfully painted wooden scroll trim under the eaves and wooden timbers on the roof top, much like the real ones that were designed to hold the roof on during inclimate weather.
There is a wooden door at the very back embossed with the words, "West Germany" and held in place with two metal latches. The door easily removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven, "Regula"movement signed by Schmeckenbecher. A weight driven movement simply means that thechains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, cuckoo, and music. Regula makes the very best clock movements and Emil used this make in most of his higher end clocks. Thebellowtubes are intact and the topslook and sound good too! At thebottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the smalldoor to the right above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside the case and then retreats back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours. As he cuckoos, the two men in front, hoist and lower their steins until the cuckoo activity stops; fascinating! When the bird is back inside after his hourly cuckoo rounds, the small green door to the left opens up and another beer mug appears in the doorway. At the same time, a high quality Swiss music box inside the case plays a heavenly rendition of In Munchen steht ein Hofbrauhaus (In Munich stands a Hofbrauhaus), one of the most popular German tunes ever! The music shuts offwhen the beer mug goes back inside the clock, closing the door behind it (door remains slightly opened). Thisclockhas a lot of features!I findsome light, understandable wear includinga red shutter is missing and othe trim around the top left window. The clock is very impressive and equally so in size measuring about 12" high (not counting theweights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" deep, and about13" across the top. The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and the music plays well too though being an old clock and we don't know the service history, some adjustments orservice maybe necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We often recommend to a clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocks serviced at least once every three years. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attachedmetal chainsand three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.I am not sure that the pendulum is original to this clock.
