Antiques Judaica Sculpture Nathan The Wise Bronze Marble Italian N. Picciole For Sale
Antiques Judaica Sculpture Nathan the Wise Bronze Marble Italian N. Picciole
This bronze sculpture was made in Italy in the 19th century by the famous Italian sculptor N. Picciole. It depicts the main character, Nathan, from the famous 18th century play Nathan the Wise(in the original German, Nathan der Weise).
Nathan the Wise, one of the first plays to feature a wise Jew,was published by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in 1779, and was a moving plea for religious tolerance. It describes how the wise Jew Nathan, the sultan Saladin, and the Templar bridge their gaps via friendship, tolerance, and communication. Central to the theme of the play is the Ring Parable, in which a father promises his magic ring to each of his three sons. The ring has the power to make its owner pleasant in the eyes of God and mankind, and in order to keep his promise to each of his sons the dying father has two exact replicas made of the ring. It was judged that it was impossible to tell which brother had the real ring, and that each brother must strive to live their lives in such a manner as to prove the ring's powers to be true, and it was up to each brother to live a life that was pleasant in the eyes of God and mankind, rather than expecting the ring to do it for them. The play has been adapted into English, and has been produced in theaters in the United States, Rome, and has been broadcast on PBS television.
The bronze sculpture has a rich brown patina with light rubbing from handling. It is in good condition with no damage or repair. It is signed "N. Picciole" and numbered "114," and it is mounted on a square marble base (see photos). The sculpture weighs approximately 3 pounds, 7 ounces, and it measures approximately 8.5 inches tall, and the base measures approximately 3 inches wide X 3 inches deep.
