This sale is for a near fine condition original letter from Lt. John W. Pollock, formerly of the 83rd Regiment PVI, from the Headquarters , Northern District, D.S. Office of the Provost Marshall in Charleston, South Carolina. In this three page missive (Sorry, no envelope with this letter) Pollock reacts to the assassination of President Lincoln, details his war service after leaving Edisto Island in February, and his current service under General Hatch. Speaks of the social situation in Charleston as well, and wishes well to Alice's family (Dr. William Judson of Waterford, PA) Alice Judson was later to marry Sgt. Charles Himrod of the 83rd Regiment, but she kept these letters from Lt. Pollock. They were still preserved in the Judson/ Himrod home in Waterford, PA to the present.
