Highly Illuminated ArabicManuscript. A Complete Small Koran,Signed and Dated. 303 leaves (606pages); size: 12.7 x 18 cm; written surface: 9.6 x 14.8 cm; 15 lines to a page,in clear, elegant and uniform naskhī script, in black ink, on beige paper. The text is vocalized throughout. There are 2handsomely illuminated pages in the beginning and one at the end. Altogether, there are 3 illuminated pages.

All headings of surasare written in white ink on gold background.All verses are separated by gold discs.All pages are ruled in several lines of gold and blue.

The divisions of the Koran are marked withbeautiful and colorful medallions on the margins. There are tens of such divisions. The recitational marks are indicated in redthroughout. All the colors used arenatural dyes. All the gilding in themanuscript used 24 carat gold.

It was written in the village ofZartariji by the master calligrapher `Uthman Ibn Ahmad, whose calligraphicability has been certified by Ibrahim al-Raghibi, in the Islamic year 1250,corresponding to the year 1834 AD. It isclear that this is an Ottoman Qur’an.

Contemporaryleather binding, with a flap in the traditional Islamic bookbinding,withcentral medallion in a gilt arabesque design; spine is rebacked. A lovely little Koran is in excellentcondition. [K62]
