Arthur Szyk Boxed Passover Haggadah 1957 Jewish Art Judaica Hebrew Bible Hagadah For Sale
Detailed item info Arthur SZYK BOXED Passover HAGGADAH 1957 JEWISH ART JUDAICA Hebrew Bible Hagadah
Here's an extremely hard to come by edition of Arthur Szyk's Passover Haggada. It is what I would call the "Deluxe" Edition as it comes with a very nice boxed cover. The cover of the Hagadah itself is blue velvet. It was published in Jerusalem-Tel Aviv in 1957, by Massadah and Alumoth, but on the back title page inEnglish it states that "The Illustrations ...are reproductions of originals of Arthur Szyk of New-Canaan,Connecticut...ENGRAVED BY THE SUN ENGRAVING CO. ENGLAND". On the bottom of this very same page it stated that it was printed and produced in Israel.
This particular Haggada was previously owned by the famous Hagada collector Harry Hirschorn of Chicago, whose rubber stamp appears in several places in the beginning of the Hagadah. What is also different than most of the Szyk editions is that there are 2 lithographic prints in black and white of Moses, as seen in the scan below.
Each 2 pages are connected (double pages throughout the Hagada). There are no paginations. According to Hirschorn this Hagada is to be labeled as Yaari 2463.
Measurements: The Haggada itself measures slightly more than 11 inches in length and 8 inches wide. The box that the Haggada comes in measures 12x10x1.5 inches. There's a golden goblet illustration on the cover of the box.
This Hagada as well as the other Szyk haggadot are in HebrewAND AN ENGLISHtranslation, as seen in the scan above (which I could not fit on the scanner because it was bigger than the scanner).
Here is what a fellow er wrote me about this Haggada:
"The original Haggadah by Szyk was made in 1939. There were no other copies made until 1956 and after. THey came in various sizes and covers throughout the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. However, the edition printed in 1956 is considered to be the ''first trade edition'' and they are more scrace than the ones printed in 1957 and later. The 1956 edition came in a light blue clamshell box. The 1957-1960 editions came in a dark blue clamshell box. The 1956 edition was published by ''Massadah and Magen''. The 1957 and later editions were published by ''Massadah and Alumoth'' Value of the 1956 edition by other dealers that I have seen in the past have varied from $350.00 to class="Apple-interchange-newline">
