Attica Athens Owl Ar Tetradrachm C 440-404 Bc Ngc Au Ancient Greek Coin For Sale
This sale is for an original, well struck, high relief Athens Owl Tetradrachm (17.01 g, 24 mm). This classic Greek coin was struck circa 440-404 BC. It is nicely centered in elegant style. Most Owls on the market have dipped out, “burned,” un-natural surfaces. This Owl has that un-dipped, natural skin that is highly desirable. Also, check out the details of the high points, evidence of very little wear. This is how you want an almost uncirculated, problem free, ancient coin to look.
Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right. Reverse: Owl standing to right, olive sprig and crescent behind, all within incuse square.
Most Athens Owls are poorly made with awful, weak, or off center strikes. Terrible surface quality is the norm. Despite many of these popular Owls being available, really nice specimens are few and far between.
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corp) grades this coin AU (almost uncirculated) with Strike 4/5 and Surface 4/5 ratings. I recommend going to the NGC website for more detailed explanations of the grades this coin received
Ancient coins listed on are usually not certified by NGC and often harshly cleaned or have major problems and poor eye appeal. Do yourself a favor and invest only in ancient coins certified by NGC.
