I am constantly digging around at estate sales, attics, sales, flea markets, and swap meets. I list items for sale on almost every day. So stay tuned. Another item you can’t do without is coming soon.
In Good Working Condition
This is an Atwater Kent Breadboard Style Variometer, or VariCoupler from the mid 1920's. It consists of a rotor coil and a stator coil mounted on the characteristic Atwater Kent Maroon Bakelite frame. The rotor is controlled by a shaft so that its inductance can either aid or oppose the inductance of the stator, thereby providing the function of a variable inductor, or tuner for a radio or crystal set.
Solid brass posts provide support and holes in the round feet allow for mounting to a surface. It is complete with matching AK maroon Bakelite dial calibrated from 0 to 100. An adaptor sleeve in the knob allows mounting the 3/16 inch shaft into the 1/4 inch diameter knob hole.
Overall diameter, and therefore the height is approx 4 1/2 inch. Depth front to rear is approx 6 1/2 inches including knob.
The brass support posts have some pitting, adding to the patina. The posts can be removed and buffed out if desired, as I did on the Atwater Kent Logo. (see photos) There are no chips, cracks, or scratches on any part of the Bakelite frame. The rotor rotates smoothly and positively with no rubbing on the stator. All coil windings are held securely in place.
This tuner displays very well and can be the basis for a crystal radio or other radio project.
I make every attempt to describe items completely and accurately, and to show any flaws clearly in the photographs. Questions are invited and will be answered promptly.
