A churinga is an object of wood or stone that is considered sacred by various aboriginal tribes of Central Australia and that is often elliptical in shape, bears incised designs, is believed to represent either the spiritual double of a living native or the embodiment of the spirit of a totemic ancestor, and is generally regarded as secret.Aged patina however essentially sound condition with just a slight edge chip towards one end. Length 13½ inches (34cm) The piece weighs 60 grams approx. There are many interpretations for these enigmatic artifacts, however a recurring one is the understanding of Churingas as sacred carvings in wood (or stone) containing the souls of members of Australian tribes.
