Confederate Appeals to Union General to Keep his Home in Georgia August 25, 1864-Dated Civil War Period, Autograph Letter Signed, “A.J. Pierce,” to Union General Smith at Cartersville, Complaining that he was accused of “harboring bushwackers,” Forsythe County, Georgia, Very Fine. This original Letter is written in brown ink upon period lined paper, 10.5” x 7.75”, 1 page, with very unusual and interesting content, in part: “it is true I have sons in the Confederate service that have been home but as for either of them being guilty of the charge alledged to them I declare it to be a false and defamatory accusation…” He asks for a chance to clear himself and for permission to return home: “…I have a growing crop which needs my attention… need it for my little ones that are not able to watch over themselves… You have the power over me…” A well-written letter, from war-torn Georgia, with minor toning and normal folds.
