Description

Authentic Antique Victorian Edwardian Straw Boater Skimmer Hat GREAT NEW LOOK!

This sale is for an authentic antique Victorian and Edwardian period summer straw boater (also called a basher, skimmer, cady, katie, somer, sennit hat, or in Japan, can-can hat). The hat, made of three layers of stiff sennit straw, has a stiff, flat crown and brim. There is a deep blue grosgrain ribbon with red and white stripes, which runs the circumference of the crown, and has a decorative 'bow' at one side. This boater was made by Cosmopolitan of New York and was part of the Publicity Department at Gimbels-Schusters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There is a wide black leather headband at the inside rim with a small ribbon for hanging, as well as a size tag which is '7.' The boater apparently was used for a variety of 'publicity' schemes - more than likely it was used on mannequins in different departments to highlight fashions for the upper crust of society. This straw boater is in near mint condition, with a very slight dent to the straw on the crown - otherwise there are no breaks to the straw anywhere to be found, no stains, and no cracks. Again, it is a size 7. If you require any measurements, please contact us!

Boaters were popular as casual summer headgear in the late 19th century and early 20th century, especially for boating or sailing, hence the name. They were supposedly worn by FBI agents as a sort of unofficial uniform in the pre-WWI years. They were also worn by women, often with hatpins to keep them in place. Nowadays, they are seen at sailing or rowing events, period theatrical and musical performances (e.g. barbershop music) or as part of old-fashioned school uniform, such as at Harrow School. Since 1952, the straw boater hat has been part of the uniform of the Princeton University Band, notably featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated Magazine in October, 1955. Recently, soft, thin straw hats with the approximate shape of a boater have been in fashion among women - why own a cheap imitation when you could own the real thing?

I would hate for you to be disappointed with any aspect of your purchase.
