The artist is the famous Jin Meisheng (金梅生)

Jin Meisheng (1902-1989) was a native from Shanghai. From 1920 onward, he painted calendar posters exclusively for the Commercial Press in Shanghai. In 1930, he established his own studio. Together withJin Xuechen and Li Mubai,he was known as one of the \"Three Pillars of Calendar Posters\". From the 1950s onward, Jin was attached to the Shanghai People\'s Fine Arts Publishing House [上海人民美术出版社, Shanghai renmin meishu chubanshe]. Jin was able to assimilate Chinese traditional painting and Western watercolor in his works despite their separate and unique styles.

After 1949, Jin joined the Chinese Artists Association; he became a member of the Standing Council and art advisor of the Shanghai Branch of the Association. His works, for which he won prizes during national competitions, have been included in a number of national collections.

I purchased this poster in a Beijing flea market in the early 1990\'s. Back then these markets had to be kept low on the radar of the officials and police. You had to trek out to dusty fields on the outskirts of the city, which are now populated by glass and steel office buildings.
This poster was more than likely displayed in a place of business and then hidden for many years during theupheavals of the Cultural Revolution, when just having this artwork would have gotten you into trouble. It therefore shows its wear and effects of being squirreled for nearly 50 years. There are small tears that were mended by their previous owner with tape. Some of the edges of the work have small pieces missing or small tears. But for a piece that has been through this much history and survived it is inremarkable shape.
Please don\'t hesitate to ask me any questions about the piece.
