Awesome 16th - 17th C. English Or Italian Swept Hilt Bastard Back Sword (rapier):
Fabulous large example of an early Renaissance era back sword with a swept-hilt style guard, having a long single edged blade most efficient for delivering both thrusting and devastating slashing blows from the horseback at battle, blade has survived in great condition retaining most of its original steel finish with scattered areas of light pitting, the ricasso with well preserved struck maker's marks and slightly heavier pitting. Beautiful large steel hilt mainly used on the rapiers of the period thus more scarce with this horseman type of sword, guard is undamaged and showing nice original patina and fine pitting. Solid and overall intact with a later professionally restored leather grip and finished with an impressively large pommel making the sword suitable for a two handed grip during combat. overall 44 1/2" blade 37".
