B&o Shop, Lunkenheimer, Or Powell 8 Inch Dia Brass 3 Chime Whistle Steam Loco For Sale

This whistle is 8 inches in diameter and 27 inches tall. The bowl is brass. The flat plate on the top of the bowl is iron. The bell is brass. The whistle weighs over 65 pounds. It is similar in construction to Lunkenheimer or Powell chime whistles, but more heavy-duty than any others I have seen. The base is very heavy and the flange was made to keep this whistle in place on a moving locomotive!The gentleman I got this from told me that his uncle got it when he retired from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He said it had been used on a steam locomotive. The acorn on top is painted black. Sometimes the acorn was painted to match the loco. There are no manufacturer's marks or numbers on this whistle. I remember seeing a pic of this type of chime whistle directly on top of the steam dome of a B&O or P&R express locomotive from the 1880's, 1890's or early 1900's, but I can't locate one now.The whistle completely disassembles with no stuck parts. Dimensions: Acorn 2.3" across flats, 3.5" tall. Bowl 9.332" dia. Flange 6.475" diameter, 5" bolt circle. In the flange there are four 0.658" through holes for bolts. Bell 18" tall. 3.5" arches. Chambers from the top of the arch are 9.5" with a flat top inside the bell, 6.325" with a flat top inside the bell, and the long chamber is open to the dome-shaped top of the bell, so the long chamber is 10.5" to the edge of the dome and 14.5" to the top of the dome. Considering that the top of the long chamber is rounded, this whistle could be the forerunner of the famous B&O Tumor Top 3 Chime. The high arches make this whistle a real screamer!This whistle is old with the "original patina" and some soot! There is a shallow wide dent on the long chamber side. Otherwise it is in excellent condition for its age and history! Please see the pics.This is a very unusual whistle! You may never see another one. I will need to make a crate to ship it.
