Best 19c Chinese Soapstone Lidded Censor W Rings & Fine Jade Like Carved Details For Sale
For your consideration we have here a rarely found late 19c Chinese carved soapstone censor or incense burner with lid/cover in amazing detailed archaic type carving. This censor was produced in China during the later part of the 1800s most like around the c1880s and I would think this was not a normal export piece but perhaps an object made for a more personal purchase possible even for the domestic market. This is without a doubt the very best small carved censor in soapstone or a number of other materials that I have ever seen in any collections or sales and I mentioned that it has jade like details meaning that the artist took much care and time producing this as if it were a jade object because it is rare to find a soapstone object with such fine details and subject matter. The body is of a pleasing shape with the outside and lid showing many relief carved panels containing archaic style designs with raisedmultileveldivisions and edges with fabulous carved handles complete with loose rings along with four cabriolet type legs fully surface engraved with a key design turning inward with the artist leaving a thin attached soapstone flat base so the censor could sit on its own and give extra strength like a stretcher to the underside on a wooden stand. The lid or cover is also an amazing carving feat with again more relief carved panels with a bold looking finial to the top having four more loose rings with delicate shaped hooks holding them with both sides being finished with archaic designs and a stippled background with the very top having a opening to let the smoke out. The inside of both cover and vessel are well hollowed out and the veins of color are gorgeous with a number of earth tone shades that are quite spectacular to the polished outer sides. Condition is absolutely perfect without even the smallest chip, crack, loss or repair which is amazing considering the age and material. Sizes: Width 6" (outside handle to outside handle) x depth 2-5/8" x Height 5". This is a must for any collector or dealer as these don't come up for sale very often.
