The BEST we've ever seen!
Offered here is an incredible antique 1800's solid oak massive sideboard with it's original beveled mirror top.The master artist who carved this piece added all the bells and whistles! He did not miss anything. Every surface is carved. Remember that this is all solid oak, which is very difficult to carve. That's what make this piece so special and one of a kind.
All hand tooled, these beautiful architectural furniture antiquities are getting harder and harder to find.
Where shall I start? The first design detail is crown molding on the top pediment, then egg and dart design under that. Next, flanking the north wind face in the middle, are scrolls and acanthus leaves which terminate on corner blocks carved with 2-3 different flowers. Not sure the names of the flowers. Another small dental border below. The top finishes with some kind of scalloped drop, again with a different carving inside the drops.
The back huge 23" high x 59.5 " wide beveled mirror is outlined with egg and dart carving.
There are two 26" high x 5" wide barley twist corner posts that are joined by carved scrolled support. The support posts are also carved to the max with ribbing, acanthus leaves ending in a rolled foot. Of course the mirror top and posts come apart from the bottom for moving.
The bottom features two large 29" wide x 4 1/4" high drawers which are carved to cant downwards. Each front is vertical ribbed. The hand cast drawer pulls are gorgeous! Each solid brass back plate has an elegant Medusa like lady's face in the middle. The escutcheon key holes are cast brass screaming Zeus faces!
Figural carytid ornament in between the lower doors that measures 17" high x 4" wide. Carved in relief.
On each side of the carytid, half man half beast figurine, are a pair of 24" wide x 16" high medallion designed doors . So fabulous! They are both carved differently. Each are in relief carved and feature the profile of a young and old knight, both wearing helmets. So finely carved to show their elegant features. Within each medallion there are also carved florid spandrels. Egg and dart carving bands the medallions. The doors are recessed, to add to the overall pleasing design.
To mimic the top, there are 33" high x 3" wide barley twist columns that start and end in a different carved leaf and flower corner blocks. Again, the top is carved differently than the bottom.
Below the doors is one final long large drawer, 61" wide by 5 1/2" high. The drawer is outlined by ball /dot raised carvings. Two beautiful cast lady cabinet pulls, as on the top, finish the drawer.
All drawers are dove tailed, as expected. The secondary wood is also solid oak.
The front feet are really an interesting combination of a big hairy paw and a smashed bun foot.
This finely crafted piece measures approximately 6ft long and stands 6ft tall by 26" deep. Very large and great for storage! 1880-1890s.
Has a wonderful shape, would look elegant in a hallway, dining room, or as a service station in a restaurant or bed and breakfast. It would also be great to use as a place to put your big flat screen TV!
Condition- Since this is antiquefurniture, you will expect to see little dings here and there. Conditions listed beloware all mild. We will clean and detail the piece before it is sent to you. Slight water damage on the very top pediment in 3 small sections. The case is made of 3 solid oak boards originally glued together Two seams are not flush, about a 1 mm gap. All age related due to contraction and expansion of the wood over 120+ years due to humidity levels in the house.
Little warping on the plywood back on the bottom half .
Left hand door is slightly loose on the hinges. On one side, the oak boards havetwo slight gaps. One 1mm gap on the other side. We expect to see this happen to old solid wood boards.
You will not be disappointed with this fabulous piece of furniture! You will love it!
Insurance is included.
