Like Bakst and Benouis, Ivan Yakovlevitch Bilibine (1876-1942) belongs to most famous Russian graphic-art designers and illustrators. The precise details of his compositions and the care carried to the details testifya meticulous study to the objects, clothing and traditions of the Russian folklore. His drawings are recognized for their historical precision, in a style which approaches Art-déco. These illustrations to Russian Fairy Tales were created during his life in Paris (1925-1936).

To the sides of Maria of the Seas and the Princess Splashes, all these fairy-like characters are magistralement been useful by the luminous illustrations of the painter Ivan Bilibine. These tales of the Russian folklore, became classic tales for children, make us find the legendary figures of the Yaga Baba in its maisonette assembled on hen legs, of Kochtchei Immortal, to which Ivan tsarévitch and its inseparable gray wolf are measured, or Vassilissa the Very Beautiful one protected by its headstock.

Born in a middle-class family from Saint-Petersburg in 1876, Ivan Yakovlevitch Bilibine choosesto study painting rather than the right. Ivan Bilibine illustrated his first tales in 1899, inspirated of discoveriesby hismany voyages through Russia.

The Illustrator, painter, creator of costumes and decorations, this wandering artist will live successively in Cairo and Paris. Hedesigned the decorations and costumes of various stage performances (Boris Godounov, the Tsar Saltan, Prince Igor, Oiseau of fire...) and illustrated Russian popular tales.

Ivan Bilibine died in 1942 (death of hunger) in Saint-Petersburg (Leningrad) during the time ofthe siege by the Germans.

"The Water King's Daughter. --...Far beyond the twenty-seven prairies, in the thirtieth empire,...there lived a Tsar and his Tsarina. One time the Tsar was abroad upon a long journey, and during his absence the Tsarina gave birth to a beautiful boy, who was called Nikita-Son-of-the-Tsar. It was a summer day just like this, and the Tsar was on his way back to his own kingdom. The Sun blazed upon him. The heat was intense. The Tsar grew so thirsty that he stopped for a drink at the edge of a lake which he was passing just then. He lay down on the bank and drank long draughts of the icy water.

Suddenly he felt a tug at his beard, and behold, the King of the Waters had him fast in his grip.

'Let me go,' cried the Tsar. "I will not,' the King of the Waters replied. 'How dare you to drink here without my permission?'

'Let me go," said the Tsar. 'Ask me what you will, only let me go home.' 'Well', said the Water King, 'there is that in your palace of which you know nothing. Give it to me and I will release you.'

The Tsar thought to himself, 'How can there be in my place any thing of which I know nothing?' And so he gave his promise and went on his way. As he neared home, the Tsarina came running to meet him with the little Nikita-Son-of-the-Tsar held out in her arms. To her surprise the Tsar burst into tears at the sight of the babe. And she, too, wept when he told her of his promise to the King of the Waters, for they both knew that the thing of which the Tsar had known nothing must be his baby son.

....The Tsar's son grew and grew, and at last the time came when his father dared no longer forget his promise to the Water King. So he led his son down to the lake where he had drunk on his way home from his journey. 'Search here for my ring, my son,' the Tsar said to the youth. 'I lost it but yesterday.' And he went away, leaving his son by the water. As the lad looked for the ring, there came to him a tiny old women, who greeted him, saying, 'What are you doing, O Nikita...?' ...Nikita was troubled. 'Why should I speak so to that kind old woman?' he thought...He ran after he asking her pardon for his impolite words....'Not to find a lost ring were you sent here,...' the old woman declared....."

EDITION:

1. The published form of a literary work.

For example all later printings of a First Edition are still a "First Edition".

STATE:

Small changes in the plates, like correcting the errors, broken types or taking out an illustration during the printing process, result in small differences. Different states can be still parts of one printing. Normally the early states have a very high catalog value.

The amount of produced books, or newspaper, etc. during one edition or printing.
