Norman Rockwell\'s THE TOY MAKER

Being offered on this sale is Titmouse Pessimist Figurine made by Bing & Grøndahl of Copenhagen, Denmark. This is B&G Figurine # 1635. It features gorgeous bird in blue and brown tones. This is matte finish figurine. It is not glossy.

Danish artist and sculptor Jens Peter Dahl-Jensen (1874 - 1960) designed this figure. There are his initials DJ incised on the backside of bird’s tail. He is probably the most famous and most collectible Danish porcelain designer. He worked for Bing and Grondahl for twenty years, 1897 - 1917. He then spent a further eight years as artistic director at their Norden factory in Copenhagen. In 1925 he started his own factory in Copenhagen, making the porcelain pieces for which he is best known. His company became a family company also involving his wife Martha D-J and the son Georg D-Jensen, who continued production until 1981 and after selling off all its stock, closed in 1984.

Bing & Grondahl (B&G) was founded in 1853 and existed until 1987, when Royal Copenhagen merged with Bing and Grondahl. B & G, Bing & Grondahl refer to the founders: Fred. Vilh. Grøndahl (1819-1856), technical director; the brothers M.H. Bing (1819 - 1883) and J.H. Bing (1811 -1896) as economical directors. This figurine is marked with three towers in green. This hallmark comes from the City Coat of Arms of Copenhagen. ‘B&G’ printed below the tower in green circle identify production of 1970-1983. There is also ‘B&G’ printed in blue and model number 1635 and production painter initial E printed in green printed on the backside. We do not know the name of this artist. This figurine is still in production. It has Royal Copenhagen number 1020-411.

Figurine measures about 5 ½” x 2” and stands 2 ¼” tall. Condition is immaculate with no cracks or chips found. Colors are bright and vibrant. Please take a look at the pictures to find out more about this item.
