This sale is for an original1939 edition of "THE SOUTHERN COOK BOOK OF FINE OLD RECIPES" from the Culinary Arts Press.

YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

It contains 322 "traditional" southern

dishes.

Many of these date back to the Civil War to the time the Southern Sates were known as the Confederate states of America, C.S.A. Confederacy.

Since mammies couldn't rely on written receipts or recipes, most of the wonderful recipes from these great cooks derive from tradition and experience formany were not learned in the manner of reading and writing. They created magic in their kitchens with whatever they could.

It is adorned with numerous illustrations and songs sung by the plantation slave of the Old South. These songs are historically important as it wastheir attempt to preserve the Negro culture they had brought with them from Africa.Although the drawing were meant to celebrate the rich history of the SouthernAfrican-American when the book was published, today we would call these images stereotypical, politically incorrect, and even demeaning in some cases.

Many of these make use of the "N" word whichspeaks volumes of the era in which this book was written. It is a relic of an era where racially inappropriate and insensitive products were widely available. Thankfully, society has moved past this era. While it was a negativepart of our progress, this cook book is a reminder of thatplace in history and servesas an important tool for education about the past.

Published in1939, this cookbook is in VERY GOOD CONDITION for its age and especially to be74 YEARS OLD!!! ALL PAGES ARE PRESENT!!! withNO TEARS!!!There are no instrusive or unsightly intext markings; however, a previous owner wrote "good" by the Barbecued Chicken recipe.The originalouter wooden covers measure 6 1/4" by 9 1/4" and it is complete with 48 pages.The rings are the original bakelite rings.
