Monica Astrid Stensdotter Backström, unmarried Hultberg, born May 20, 1939 in the Oscars parish in Stockholm, died February 17, 2020, was a Swedish designer and artist.
Backström studied at the Art College and HKS 1959–1964, where she among other things designed a coffee tableware in silver. She won a competition organized for Boda Glasbruks 100th Anniversary, which became the start of her work as a glass designer at Boda Glassworks in 1965. She has participated in collections exhibitions at the Röhsska Museum and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and she has had exhibitions in the USA, Japan, Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Her experimental passion was great and she created a number of different clothing collections where some parts were reused in glass art. When Kosta Glassworks turned 250 in 1992, she created her magnificent jars, and at the Kalmar Union's 600th anniversary in 1997, she designed a magnificent plinth that was then handed over by King Carl Gustaf to King Harald of Norway. In addition to glass, she has designed jewelry in her own direction since April 2006 and painted paintings.
